WHO: Kyle Stanley
WHAT: A 65-yard wedge into the water
WHEN: Final round of the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open
WHERE: 570-yard par-5 18th hole at Torrey Pines

Golf is easy looking in the rearview mirror. Still, it’s hard to understand how Stanley couldn’t make a double-bogey at 18, which would’ve given him the title. It took several huge mistakes for Stanley to make an eight, which dropped him into a playoff that he lost to Brandt Snedeker.

Stanley’s mistakes included laying up with his second shot instead of blasting his second shot at or over the green; hitting a wedge approach with so much spin that it sucked back off the green and into the water; and finally, three-putting. The wedge into the water might be the shot that Stanley most regrets, because hitting a no-spin wedge from 65 yards is easy.

THE DRILL: To take the spin off a wedge, you’ve got to radically decrease the angle of attack into the ball by using what I call a “sweepy” instead of a steep release. You also need to move the ball a little further back than normal in your stance and shift your weight a little more to the target side than you would do with a standard shot.

To practice no-spin wedges, take practice swings by holding the club with only your right hand. Hold the club at the bottom of the grip so that your right hand (for a right-hander) touches both the grip and the shaft; the butt end of the grip should be near the middle of your right forearm. Make a little backswing and sweep through impact. Just after impact, the butt end of the shaft should hit your right forearm and the shaft should align down your arm. The club and your right arm should remain in that synchronized position for the first half of the follow-through. I like doing this drill without a ball, but you can hit shots using the same technique.

Stanley one clear at Torrey Pines

The 24-year-old rookie from Washington State stumbled through his opening nine holes (the back nine) in level par after dropping three shots in three holes from the 14th, but came home in four-under 32 to take the lead on his own.

He is a shot clear of Brandt Snedeker, who shot a 64 around the North Course. Spencer Levin, who shared the lead after the first round, struggled round the South Course in 76 and is back in a tie for 20th place.

Snedeker’s 64 was the best round of the day and the 31-year-old from Nashville is delighted at the way his season has started after hip surgery in the autumn.

He finished tied eighth last week and continued that good form at a course he has always enjoyed.

He told Sky Sports: “I am excited. I had no idea what it was going to be like coming out here after that kind of surgery.

“To feel as strong as I did after last week – having to walk 27 holes on the last day – and to come here and continue playing well is a huge bonus going into the weekend and hopefully I can keep the good golf going.

“I love this place and I love coming back here.”

Watson triumphs at Torrey

Bubba Watson won the Farmers Insurance Open by a single stroke after a nerveless final round of 67 at Torrey Pines on Sunday evening.

The 32-year-old held off Phil Mickelson and Jhonattan Vegas – winner of last week’s Bob Hope Classic – down the stretch to clinch his second career PGA Tour title.

Watson finished at 16-under-par, while Mickelson eventually had to settle for second just a stroke back following a 69, with Vegas (68) taking a share of third alongside Dustin Johnson (66) at 13-under.

DA Points (67) was fifth on his own at 12-under, while Nick Watney fired a spectacular course record 63 over the South lay-out to claim a share of sixth with Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan.

Starting on the tenth tee, Watney produced an extraordinary start to his round as he birdied eight of his first nine holes to hit the turn in just 28 shots and went on to add an eagle at the sixth as he rocketed up the leaderboard.

Hot putter

But it was Watson who emerged triumphant as he showed calmness under pressure and superb touch with his putter to outlast his rivals.

The Ryder Cup star made a crucial up-and-down from off the back of the green at 17 to maintain a one-shot lead over Vegas heading to the par-five 18th.

Playing in the group behind, Mickelson then produced a tap-in birdie at 17 after an exquisite approach to join Vegas at -14 just one back of Watson.

Vegas’ challenge hit the buffers when his five-iron approach to the 570-yard final hole came up short and found water short of the green.

Crucial birdie

He would go on to take a bogey-six while Watson conjured another wonderful up-and-down, this time from a greenside bunker, to close with a birdie.

That ensured Mickelson had to hole his third shot at 18 from around 75 yards for an eagle to force a play-off and, while a brilliant effort, it came to rest just a few feet from the hole to confirm Watson as champion.

An emotional Watson – who recently lost his father to cancer – said afterwards: “It’s hard every time you look at it (winning).

“You’ve got Phil, you’ve got the guy that won last week, Vegas, you’ve got all these guys up the leaderboard that have won before and any bad step and they’re going to catch you.

“All I thought about today was getting my head down and just playing my game, I birdied every par-five and it helped me out today.”

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods endured a disappointing end to his week in San Diego with a closing 75 seeing him drop back to one-under-par in a share of 44th.

The former world number one had never previously finished outside the top-10 at Torrey Pines and has won on no fewer than seven occasions at the course.
